Leather Characteristics

At Franks Boots, we take pride in crafting handmade boots that embody the essence of natural leather. Our commitment to using organic materials ensures that each pair of boots not only showcases the timeless beauty of genuine leather but also embodies sustainability and environmental responsibility. Experience the authentic allure of our artisanal creations, where every step taken is a testament to our dedication to quality craftsmanship and respect for nature.

We strive for perfection in every aspect of our leather, but it's important to understand the inherent qualities of this natural material. With over 65+ hides in our inventory, each piece bears its own unique markings, variations in color, wrinkles, and occasional imperfections like holes or scratches. Here's what you need to know about our commitment to quality and some tips for selecting the ideal leather for your new boots.

Types of Hides: Our leather comes in various cuts, such as sides, double shoulders, butts, and whole hides. Each cut presents its own distinct characteristics:

  • Sides may feature softer areas with more visible wrinkles
  • Double shoulders display natural neck and back wrinkles.
  • Butts offer denser leather with fewer imperfections.
  • Whole hides encompass a mix of characteristics mentioned above, including the possibility of occasional holes from the tannery's branding removal process.

Scratches, Holes, and Bites: As an organic material, leather inevitably bears some form of markings. However, these natural characteristics do not affect the overall quality grading of the hide. We typically source top-grade leather, unless otherwise specified on our limited edition leather page.

Color Variation: Each batch of leather may exhibit slight color variations. While tanneries strive to maintain consistency, minor discrepancies are possible. Pigmented leathers tend to adhere more closely to color standards, whereas aniline leathers develop unique patinas over time.

Flesh Side: Tanneries may not always consider the flesh or rough side when grading leather. While efforts are made to produce a usable flesh side, variations in color or texture may occur. Feel free to contact us for more information about specific leathers.

Limited Edition Inventory: We make every effort to keep our leather selection well-stocked. However, limited edition options may become unavailable as stocks diminish. We'll notify you promptly if your chosen leather is out of stock and offer alternative selections. Additionally, we're continually scouting for new and intriguing leathers that may captivate your interest even more!
